With both great health and attack Magmus can be both a very tanky, or hard hitting fighter and also deals magic damage whilst most of his class do not. His skills add to his dual nature by providing both extra survivability, increased AoE damage, and 2 extra block during his ultimate allowing him to actually function as a tank while he is also providing some great DPS. This also makes him surprisingly useful in Gear raid 5 as he can block 5 units at once.
